The death of three British tourists after a horrific crash in northern Italy has again highlighted the dangers faced by motorcyclists both at home and abroad.
Initial reports suggest the riders collided head-on with a lorry as they left a tunnel, and police are currently investigating the circumstances which led to the accident.
The tragedy happened at Mezzolombardo, Trento, around 300m from the tunnel exit, leaving the three Brits dead and a fourth critically ill in hospital.
Andrew Young, a motorcycle accident specialist, said the incident highlighted the dangers faced by riders on the road both in the UK and abroad.
"It is a fact that motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable road users due to the lack of protection a motorcycle affords compared to a car," he said.
"Motorcyclists are 40 times more likely to be killed in an accident than a car driver."
