Inquiry Concludes Commercial Priorities Led To Public Health Failings

25 February 2009

The Independent Public Inquiry into the supply of contaminated blood products by the NHS to Haemophilia suffers published it`s findings this week. The Inquiry Chaired by the Rt Hon Lord Archer of Sandwell Q.C., formerly Solicitor General, reviewed evidence and investigated the circumstances surrounding the supply of contaminated blood by the NHS procured from American commercial suppliers. The Inquiry found that the infection and subsequent death of thousands of Haemophilia patients amounted to the greatest treatment disaster in the history of the NHS.

The Inquiry concluded the reliance on American commercial suppliers of blood products had disastrous consequences, and that commercial priorities must never again be allowed to override the interests of public health. Financial aid for the victims of this health catastrophe must be a priority and is one of the Inquiry`s main recommendations.

Fentons Solicitors as Secretariat to the Inquiry played a central role in the Inquiry and will continue to campaign for justice for the victims of contaminated blood products. Lord Archer said, "The whole of the administrative burden has been borne by Vijay Mehan, a Solicitor with Messrs Fentons, and without his work our work would not have been possible".
